Some theory…
Attention is a cognitive process that is a precondition to learning. While attention increases with age and neurological maturation, some challenges presented to the child allow him to adopt efficient strategies to development his ability to pay attention.
How to stimulate the child's development through play...
In a context of play, ask the child to explain to you how he observes or searches. Ask him to describe to you the path his eyes follow to locate the correct image. To encourage attention, suggest to the child a strategic approach such as checking the images from right to left, following them with a finger, keeping in mind only the colour of the object sought. This will improve his selective attention, and his ability to disregard non-pertinent and entertaining information. When it is your turn, describe out loud your observation strategy and way of paying attention. Do not forget that to encourage attention, it is vital to eliminate distractions (e.g., background noises) and involve yourself fully in the game.
